What Final Fantasy VII Revelation Is and Why It Matters
Final Fantasy VII Revelation is the third and final entry in the FF7 Remake trilogy, a large-scale reimagining of the classic RPG that concludes Cloud Strife’s struggle against Sephiroth while expanding the original story with new narrative branches, locations, and systems across modern platforms. Announced at Summer Game Fest, Revelation brings the long-running “Unknown Journey” that began with Final Fantasy VII Remake in 2020 to its conclusion. Cloud and his party race against time as Meteor looms over the planet and colossal Weapons roam the world, framing the game as a high-stakes finale with a clear endpoint rather than another open-ended sequel. With the original Final Fantasy VII’s 30th anniversary as a backdrop, Square Enix is pitching Revelation as both a celebration of three decades of storytelling and a decisive closing chapter for this interpretation of Midgar’s heroes.

Spring 2027: A Multi-Platform Finale for the FF7 Remake Trilogy
Revelation’s Spring 2027 release window does more than mark the end of the trilogy; it signals a change in strategy for Square Enix. Unlike Remake and Rebirth, which arrived first as PlayStation 5 exclusives, Final Fantasy VII Revelation launches simultaneously on PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and Xbox PC. According to Square Enix’s Business Wire announcement, Final Fantasy VII Revelation “will release in Spring 2027 simultaneously” across all these platforms during the original game’s 30th anniversary year. For fans, this removes the staggered waiting periods that defined earlier entries and turns the finale into a shared event, whether you follow PlayStation, prefer Xbox, or are watching Nintendo Switch 2 games. It also suggests that the FF7 Remake trilogy’s conclusion is meant as a broad, definitive statement to the widest audience possible.

Highwind Freedom, Parachute Drops, and a World Without Boundaries
Revelation pushes exploration further than Rebirth by giving players full control of the Highwind airship over an open planet. Rather than hunting for landing strips, you can pilot the Highwind over the entire map and parachute directly to the surface at almost any point, creating a seamless air-to-land flow. The reveal trailer and Summer Game Fest gameplay segment highlighted Meteor in the sky, roaming Weapons, Wutai, the Northern Cave, and Mideel, confirming that Revelation covers the remainder of the original story’s major locations and more. The Highwind is woven into this structure as both transport and narrative tool, letting the party split up to confront multiple crises as the planet fights back. This freedom suggests a more player-directed finale, where the order of regions tackled and side stories resolved can shape how the journey to the final battle feels moment to moment.
Fits System Gameplay: Tactical Wardrobes and Combat Roles
The new Fits system gameplay is one of Revelation’s biggest mechanical shifts. Short for “Function-Integrated Tactical Suit,” Fits combines costume changes with light job-style role specialization. Outfits now matter mechanically: players can switch Cloud, Tifa, and others between Fits that echo classic Final Fantasy jobs, tuning stats and abilities while changing their appearance. Early footage showed Cloud and Tifa swapping between Freelancer and Black Mage-inspired garb, and coverage compared Fits to the Garbs system from Lightning Returns. This sits on top of the existing hybrid combat, which lets you toggle between real-time action and Tactical Mode while slotting Materia for spells and skills. By layering Fits onto Materia builds, Revelation gives returning players a deeper way to refine playstyles without discarding the feel of Remake and Rebirth, potentially encouraging experimentation across both story bosses and open-world encounters.
Vincent, Cid, and the Emotional End of Cloud and Sephiroth’s Arc
Revelation also completes the playable cast that fans expected from the FF7 Remake trilogy. Vincent Valentine and Cid Highwind are fully playable, with combat roles that emphasize their personality and history. Vincent can shoot environmental elements during exploration and transform into his Galian Beast form at the press of a button, rather than saving it for a Limit Break, and he gains new Synergy Abilities with the party. Cid leans into a dragoon identity, using his lance for flashy aerial combos and wide area attacks that control crowds. Around them, the narrative homes in on Cloud’s resolve and Sephiroth’s near-godhood as Meteor approaches. Director Naoki Hamaguchi describes the finale as centered on “resolve,” with Cloud and his companions confronting convictions built across three games, while producer Yoshinori Kitase frames Revelation as the culmination of 30 years of Final Fantasy VII storytelling.
