This is classic VPN privacy leaks territory. Leaked DNS means your “private” browsing is still visible to ISPs and network monitors, and any promise of DNS leak protection is little more than marketing copy. Six apps leaked full browsing traffic outside the tunnel, and four ran so‑called tunnels with no encryption at all. In other words, some users are routing everything through a VPN icon that protects them no more than a normal connection. If you’re in a sensitive environment, that’s dangerous; if you’re on public Wi‑Fi, it is reckless. A VPN that leaks is worse than no VPN, because it gives you false confidence.

Tunnel Hijacking, Weak Encryption, and Built‑In Tracking

The most serious flaw identified is tunnel hijacking: five apps download their configuration file—the instructions for which server to connect to—without encryption. If that file travels in plain text, an attacker on the same network, even a public Wi‑Fi operator, can rewrite it in transit and point the app at a server they control. Researchers demonstrated that the user sees the usual “connected” screen while routing everything through the attacker.

Under the hood, many apps are also using weak encryption and poor authentication. Nearly one in five OpenVPN configurations relied on outdated ciphers like Blowfish and triple DES, both carrying long‑known weaknesses that let an attacker recover data from long‑running connections. A few even set the tunnel’s data cipher to none, switching off encryption entirely. On top of that, 76 apps sent the device’s Advertising ID, and more than 80% contacted known advertising and tracking servers while sharing details such as phone model and OS version, creating a fingerprint that can single out one device. As one clear takeaway: “Be careful with free VPNs because you may end up putting your privacy at risk instead of protecting it.”

Why “Free” Costs You: Tracking, Blocking, and Exploitable Code

People install VPNs to escape tracking, yet many of these apps embed it by design. Seventy‑six of the free Android VPN apps examined sent the Advertising ID that lets marketers follow you across apps. Over 80% contacted known ad and tracking domains and transmitted device details like model, operating system version, and screen size. Alone those details seem harmless; together they create a fingerprint that can uniquely identify your device. Especially in the case of completely free VPNs, they tend to monetize your data use by showing you ads or selling your browsing data to marketing companies.

The picture gets worse. 169 apps did nothing to disguise their VPN traffic, making it easy for basic network filters to spot and block them, even though nearly two‑thirds of them claimed to beat blocking or unlock restricted content. In terms of Android security threats, this is not hypothetical. Both Blowfish and triple DES have known issues (CVE‑2016‑6329 and CVE‑2016‑2183) that allow attackers to recover data from long connections. Another mobile security firm found some free VPNs still bundled a version of OpenSSL vulnerable to Heartbleed, patched back in 2014. The conclusion is blunt: in the worst cases, these apps look less like privacy tools and more like spyware masked as VPNs.

How to Choose Safe VPN Apps and What to Do Now

You cannot fix a broken VPN app on your phone, but you can stop trusting the wrong ones. First job: see whether your current app appears in the study’s appendix and uninstall any that were flagged. The researchers have already notified the five worst offenders; two providers promised to move configuration downloads to HTTPS with proper certificate validation, while three had not acknowledged the issue. The team plans to release their testing framework publicly so app stores and regulators can repeat these checks.

Going forward, favor paid, audited VPN services over random free apps. Look for providers that publish recent independent security audits and have clear, understandable privacy policies. Any safe VPN app should use industry‑standard AES‑256 over OpenVPN or ChaCha20 over WireGuard or IKEv2, offer DNS leak protection, and include a kill switch. Treat “verified” or “no‑logs” claims as a starting point, not proof. Be wary of free apps that drown you in ads and remember that one reputable source currently recommends only a single free VPN option.
